Our Story

Community Books is a small collective of activists and books lovers who came together with the goal of opening a radical bookstore in Stone Mountain, Georgia. Co-founded by Modibo, Janis, Margo, Andrew, we are committed to becoming a resource for our community and to advancing the struggle for a better world.

Our purpose

We are striving to create a community space where readers can find affordable books that reflect the issues, ideas, and experiences of Georgia’s diverse communities and beyond. Through book signings, film screenings, and other events, we hope to establish ourselves as a stronghold of anti-racist cultural and intellectual activity.

Stone Mountain and nearby Sherman Town are largely working-class African and African-American communities, living under the shadow of the world’s largest Confederate monument. In many ways, our town is at the center of anti-racist struggle in the US South. We hope that our bookstore can become a resource for our community as we all continue to push this struggle forward.
